What are SAT Subject Tests?
There are 20 SAT Subject Tests in five subject areas. They are 1-hour long, multiple-choice tests that focus on a single subject.
SAT Subject Tests are generally given six times during the school year, on the same dates and in the same test centers as the SAT test (except in March), but not all 20 tests are offered on every SAT date. You can take up to three Subject Tests on any test date, but you cannot take the SAT and an SAT Subject Test on the same day.
The single most efficient way to improve your test scores and feel more confident is with tutoring and SAT Subject Test prep courses. Even students who excel in their high school classes can be intimidated on test day, and devoting time to learning the material that the SAT Subject Tests will test beforehand is the most important step you can take to boost your confidence.
Should You Take SAT Subject Tests?
SAT Subject Tests give colleges another way to evaluate your college readiness. Some colleges recommend, or even require, Subject Test scores as part of your college application, so it’s important to check which Subject Tests a school may require before you decide whether or not to take them.
If you must take Subject Tests, choose those that are a good fit for you or those related to subjects at which you excel. They can be a great way to demonstrate your knowledge of a subject to admissions officers. Similar to the SAT, if you are not happy with your SAT Subject Test scores, you can always take the tests again.
