Which Test is Right for You?
When it comes to your college aspirations, you may wonder which test is the best option for you. You probably already know that both the SAT and ACT are accepted by colleges across the country. But perhaps you are unaware that neither test provides you with an advantage over the other where college acceptance is concerned. However, if you want to achieve your highest scores, it’s imperative that you understand which test is best suited for your abilities and skills.
Here are some things you should know:
Question Count: The SAT has less questions than the ACT. There are 154 on the SAT as opposed to the 215 included on the ACT. Additionally, the SAT allows for more time to answer each question. Students who are overwhelmed by the pressure of time constraints, or who find time management particularly challenging, will probably feel that the SAT is better suited for them.
Length of Test: In reality, both the SAT and ACT are similar in the amount of time allotted for completion. The ACT provides students with 2 hours and 55 minutes to finish, plus an extra 40 minutes if you opt to take the essay portion. On the other hand, the SAT gives you a little bit longer, at 3 hours plus an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay.
Sections: This is potentially the deciding factor when it comes to which test is right for you. Though the two tests are structurally similar, they do have slight differences in the sections. The ACT includes: Science, English, Math, Reading, and the optional essay. Whereas, the SAT incorporates: Writing and Language, Math Calculator and Math No Calculator, Reading, and the optional essay.
Students who are strongest in History/Social Studies (the general focus of reading passages) and English, will probably prefer taking the ACT. However, those who consider math their strong suit, and are adept at doing mathematical problems without a calculator, may very well prefer the SAT.
