Which Test is Right for You?
Student proficiency in various areas is measured by both the SAT and ACT tests. These tests are typically taken by high school juniors and seniors, but there are noticeable differences between the two that may help you determine which test is right for you.
In 2016, the SAT was redesigned and now its content and style are very similar to that of the ACT, but the differences could still be deciding factors based on your own preferences and skillsets. These include:
Reading: If you struggle with higher level vocabulary, the ACT may be the better option, though there is still more reading on it than there is on the SAT. The SAT reading passages are more difficult and ask more vocabulary-based questions.
Mathematics: The SAT has less geometry questions on it than the ACT does. So, if geometry is a struggle for you, then the SAT might be the best option. But, if the idea of doing math without a calculator is intimidating, then the ACT is probably your best option due to the SAT including one no-calculator math section.
Science: You will find an entire section devoted to science on the ACT. There is no separate science section on the SAT although it does test science-based concepts. If science is not your favorite thing, you will probably prefer the SAT, but if science is a cinch for you, the ACT could be your best bet.
Time per question: Students who struggle with moving through material at a fast pace will find that the SAT is better suited for them because it allows for more time per question than the ACT does.
Of course, if you are still not sure which test is best, we suggest you start with Chyten’s SAT/ACT comparison test. We will give you a comprehensive diagnostic report that shows your strengths and gives you the best opportunity to score well.
