PSAT Tutoring Newton, MA

Chyten was founded in 1984 with a commitment to excellence and student success. During our 30-plus years, we have helped thousands of high school students get familiar with the PSAT, find their individual strengths and weaknesses before taking the SAT, and gain a significant advantage over their peers.

Chyten’s private tutoring for PSAT offers personalized solutions centered around our proprietary manual, “Mastering the SAT,” which contains more than 100 proven methods and strategies, more than 1,000 practice questions, and almost 800 pages of essential PSAT information.

Understanding the PSAT

There are three versions of the PSAT: The relatively new PSAT 8/9 which is designed for 8th and 9th graders, the PSAT 10, and the PSAT/NMSQT. Only the PSAT/NMSQT can lead to National Merit scholarships.

Students can take the PSAT 10 in the fall of 10th grade to find out what they need to work on, and can take it again in the spring to measure their progress before taking the PSAT/NMSQT in the fall of 11th grade.

The PSAT/NMSQT, or Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, is good practice for the SATs and the first step in becoming a National Merit Finalist.

For most students, the PSAT is their first exposure to college entrance exams. It includes three tests: Reading, Writing and Language, and Mathematics. Unlike the SAT, however, the PSAT does not have an essay.

Preparing for (and taking) the test has several benefits:

  • The PSAT is great practice for the SAT. Although not an exact replica, the two tests are very similar, and taking the PSAT will give students a better idea about what to expect on the SAT.
  • Analyzing PSAT results can help students identify strengths and weaknesses and help them decide whether to take the SAT or the ACT.
  • Students who take the PSAT as juniors and are among the highest-scoring test takers become eligible for National Merit Scholarships and other scholarships. This can be very helpful on college applications.
