About AP Physics Courses and Exams

The AP Program offers four physics courses and their corresponding exams.

AP Physics 1:  This full-year course is equivalent to a first semester introductory college course in algebra-based physics. Students explore topics such as kinematics; dynamics; circular motion and gravitation; energy; momentum; simple harmonic motion; torque and rotational motion; electric charge and electric force; DC circuits; and mechanical waves and sound.

The AP Physics 1 exam is three hours long. It is divided into two sections: a 90-minute multiple choice section and a 90-minute free response section. Each section of the exam is worth 50% of your total score.

AP Physics 2: This full-year course follows AP Physics 1 and is equivalent to a second semester introductory college course in algebra-based physics. The course covers fluids; thermodynamics; electrical force, field, and potential; electric circuits; magnetism and electromagnetic induction; geometric and physical optics; and quantum, atomic, and nuclear physics.

The AP Physics 2 exam is three hours long. It is divided into two sections: a 90-minute multiple choice section and a 90-minute free response section. Each section of the exam is worth 50% of your total score.

AP Physics C – Mechanics: This half-year course is equivalent to a semester-long, introductory calculus-based college course. Students study kinematics; Newton’s laws of motion; work, energy, and power; systems of particles and linear momentum; circular motion and rotation; and oscillations and gravitation.

The AP Physics C – Mechanics exam is one hour and 30 minutes long. It is divided into two sections: a 45-minute multiple choice section and a 45-minute free response section. Each section of the exam is worth 50% of your total score.

AP Physics C – Electricity and Magnetism: This half-year course follows Physics C – Mechanics and is equivalent to a semester long, introductory calculus-based college course. Students explore electrostatics; conductors, capacitors, and dielectrics; electric circuits; magnetic fields; and electromagnetism.

The AP Physics C – Electricity and Magnetism exam is one hour and 30 minutes long. It is divided into two sections: a 45-minute multiple choice section and a 45-minute free response section. Each section of the exam is worth 50% of your total score.
